INDIE FILM COMPOSER NAN AVANT EARNS NEW ACCOLADE FOR CONCERT PIECE “TRIBUTUM”
Music Resource Group (MRG) Nominates Concert Piece Composed for Bagpipes for Independent Music Award (IMA)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
SEATTLE – (March 18, 2014) – Indie film composer Nan Avant’s most recent concert piece, “Tributum,” written for the Celebrate World Music! world premiere concert and CD, has been nominated for a 2014 Independent Music Award (IMA) as “Best Instrumental Song” by Music Resource Group’s (MRG) awards program for independent bands and fans. The Celebrate World Music! CD is nominated for “Best Classical Album.”
Avant joins hundreds of international self-released and independent label artists named as Nominees in The 13th Independent Music Awards. This eclectic mix of established artists and artists on the rise includes Melissa Ferrick, Yuck, The Soul of John Black, Omar Sosa, Willie Sugarcapps, Born Of Osiris, Vienna Teng and Suzzy Roche & Lucy Wainwright Roche, among many other deserving artists.
Representing the broad spectrum of today’s global independent music scene, the IMA judging panel chose Nominees in over 80 Album, Song, Music Video and Design categories, culled from thousands of submissions from North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, Greenland and Europe.
Two winners will be selected in each category. A judge-determined winner will be chosen based on ratings from the artist and the IMA panel of influential artist and industry judges, which includes Seattle’s own Ann Wilson & Nancy Wilson, together with Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Vega, Band Of Skulls, Judy Collins, Anthony DeCurtis (Rolling Stone), and others. The judges’ results will be announced in May 2014.
In addition to industry-determined Winners, a Vox Populi “voice of the people” winner will be chosen based on ratings from fans and visitors to The IMA Vox Pop Jukebox (http://www.independentmusicawards.com/imanominee/13th). Music fans from around the world have until Friday, July 18, 2014 to cast their votes.
“’Tributum’ pays homage to the great music of Ireland and Scotland. There is a depth of emotion in the Celtic Bagpipes that is unique to these instruments. The imagery of the Scottish Highlands, the battlefields of Glen Coe, the melancholic strains of the lyrical music of Ireland and envisioning the rolling hills of the Emerald Isle all played in my mind when composing this work,” said Avant.
Two-time Emmy-winning composer/arranger Hummie Mann praises the concert piece: “In ‘Tributum,’ Avant masterfully blends ethnic Celtic instruments with symphony orchestra to create a wonderfully moving work. Her majestic melodies and lush orchestrations transport the listener to the British Isles – it is an aural voyage worth taking.”
Tributum is one of eight original compositions included in the “Celebrate World Music” CD compilation produced by Burmer Music LLC, performed by the NW Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra under the direction of 2011 Grammy winner for Best Classical Album, David Sabee, featuring Bagpipers Dr. Eliot Grasso on the Uilleann Pipes and Kevin Auld on the Great Highland Bagpipes. This is a very original CD of World Music composed by eight acclaimed Seattle composers featuring music from around the globe.
The IMA nomination joins a growing list of accolades earned by Avant. “Tributum” was nominated for a 2013 HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Award) and has already received an Award of Merit for Composition at the 2013 Global Media Awards while many of her other projects have been lauded as well.
Her music has received numerous awards from the Park City Film Music Festival including Gold Medals and a Director’s Choice Silver Medal for Full Brain Films’ Unremembered, a feature film directed by Greg Kerr.
Avant’s music spans both traditional and new media including film, television, concerts, games, CDs and the Internet. Her diverse body of work is featured in a wide variety of popular genres from comedy and animation to documentary and drama.
Most recently, Avant scored Herman Blue: Pumpkin Comic for animator Ian Stewart. This brilliant stop-motion short quickly found an online audience on Vimeo during Halloween and was featured in global news media such as The Huffington Post.
Avant is currently working on a CD of original Latin music, an Orchestral Suite and a new Web series titled Future Certain by Greg Kerr and Portland, Oregon-based Full Brain Films. The series is now in production, filming in India, Las Vegas, Portland and Seattle, and features Tony Mirrcandani (Ender’s Game) together with Laura Faye (Grimm) and Kamyar Jahan (Grimm).
